Medium Textile Landscapes

Since childhood, I have been deeply inspired by the changing moods of the South Downs and the remarkable variety of flora and fauna that thrive across this landscape – from rare birds and butterflies to lizards, grasshoppers, and fragile native wildflowers. The announcement in November 2009 by Hilary Benn (then Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) that the South Downs would be designated a National Park felt deeply significant. The South Downs National Park officially came into being on 31 March 2010 – a moment I continue to celebrate through my ongoing project, “Textile Landscapes of the South Downs National Park”.

Each textile artwork is handcrafted using traditional, hand-sewn techniques – I never use glue or a sewing machine. Construction methods include stab stitch, dab stitch, running stitch, wrapping (using a wire skeleton wrapped in cotton, wool, or fabric), and appliqué with layered textiles. Materials include linen, cotton, chiffon, georgette, satin, wool, and calico – carefully chosen for their texture, tone, and movement.
